Watching Malayalam Cinema: A Personal Project

Malayalam cinema is great. Here’s a beginner’s guide that I found on the internet. I’d like to write more about it – in a casual way, as my understanding isn’t really good enough to write professionally. This post is a way for me to track a list of Malayalam movies that I’d like to watch.

List

Everything written by Syam Puskaran

  1. Kumbalangi Nights (2019) is the movie that triggered this post actually. It’s the directorial debut of Madhu C Narayanan. It’s not only stunningly feminist as described well by Sowmya Rajendran in her review but it’s also extremely meta about cinema in a very fun way. The film was also the first one to be produced by Syam Puskaran and his friend and director, Dileesh Pothan.
  2. Mayanadhi (2017) is a thriller and isn’t a genre that I think Malayalam cinema does particularly well. The most memorable moment I feel is the small personal moments that happen “outside” the main character’s plot.
  3. Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum (2017)
  4. Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016) is the debut film of Dileesh Pothan and is absolutely fantastic. It’s available on Netflix.
  5. Rani Padmini (2015)
  6. Iyobinte Pusthakam (2014)
  7. Idukki Gold (2013)
  8. 22 Female Kottayam (2012)
  9. Da Thadiya (2012)
  10. Salt N’ Pepper (2011)

Everything written by Anjali Menon

  1. Manjadikuru (2012)
  2. Ustad Hotel (2012)
  3. Bangalore Days (2014)
  4. Koode (2018) made me furiously cry – just bawl – in the theatre. One of the best movies I saw in the last year.
